Tillerson: Latin American Countries Should Not Rely on Chinese Investments

  • Tillerson defies critics marks important milestone

The U.S. and Mexican officials agreed to continue bilateral dialogue, while strengthening cooperation mechanisms for security, immigration and competitiveness. Perhaps he should just cut off their foreign aid, the president groused.

In Venezuela, Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino accused Washington of seeking to undermine democracy in Latin America and return to the days of "imperialism", lashing out at Tillerson during a broadcast on state television.

"If the kitchen gets a little too hot for him, I am sure that he's got some friends over in Cuba that could give him a nice hacienda on the beach and he could have a nice life over there", Tillerson said, referring to 55-year-old Maduro, who has a close relationship with Cuba's communist government. "We do have some differences, as every other country does, but we've been working very closely", said Videgaray.

A previous effort by the Trump administration to rally support on Venezuela, made in June at a meeting of the Organization of American States, failed as critics of Maduro splintered over what approach to take.

"The relevant United States views fully contradict facts, this is disrespectful to most Latin American countries ..."

Sensex cracks over 839 points the day after Budget presentation
By 12:40, seconds after the Finance Minister uttered Long Term Capital Gains Tax in the Parliament, the enthusiasm was skittled. The upward revision to the fiscal deficit target to 3.3 percent from 3 percent for 2018-2019 also dampened sentiment.

Speaking on a call with reporters earlier this week, a senior State Department official declined to say whether more sanctions were under consideration, adding that the USA would "use all economic, political, and diplomatic tools at our disposal".

But in a news conference in Mexico City, a local reporter asked Tillerson about interference from Russian Federation.

As Videgaray, a former finance minister and longtime aide of President Enrique Pena Nieto, put a good face on US-Mexico relations, he also acknowledged some tensions.

Tillerson "is a respectful person who wants to help those who are in limbo to reach a solution", said Steven Goldstein, undersecretary for public diplomacy and public affairs.

Despite the tensions, Videgaray and Freeland lavished praise on Tillerson, though not Trump, with the Canadian foreign minister referring to the American secretary of state as the voice for the respect of global rules.
