  • Envoy of the Secretary General for Syria Staffan de Mistura speaks

According to Yehya Al-Alridi, spokesman of the opposition delegation, the opposition wants to see the determination of both sides to implement the United Nations resolution through the talks.

Like in eight previous rounds in Geneva, the SNC and Syrian government representatives held separate talks with United Nations envoy Staffan de Mistura but the two delegations did not meet face to face.

The Syrian Dialogue Congress, set to take place in Sochi on January 30, is expected to gather more than 1,500 representatives of Syrian society: opposition and pro-government forces, as well as representatives of Syria's numerous ethnic and religious groups and the delegations from states participating in the peace process, with the United Nations and several regional and worldwide organizations present as observers.

The previous attempts stumbled in particular over the fate of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, with the government delegation refusing to meet the opposition face-to-face until they drop demands that he leaves office.

UN Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura said that the talks are being held at a "very, very critical" time.

The talks will last for two days.

The Sochi congress will be held on January 29 and 30.

France's foreign minister said on Wednesday there was no perspective of a political solution for other than UN-led peace talks in, which he said were the "last hope".

Sources from the Commission said that the two-day Vienna meeting will serve as a real test for the regime and Russians in determining whether they are serious in reaching a solution to the Syrian conflict.

"All of them have participated in the bloodshed of the Syrian people", he said of the five nations, blasting the U.S. as the country "that created ISIS" and adding that Saudi Arabia was anything but a "beacon of freedom in the east". According to Jaafari, it undermines the Geneva process and Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi.
