Arsene Wenger Strikes Realistic Note On Battling Man City For Jonny Evans

That's after the BBC reported that both Arsenal and Manchester City have made contact with the Hawthorns club over a transfer for the 30-year-old centre-back.

'To see off any interest of any other club, yes.

Asked about interest in Evans, the Frenchman said in a press conference: "Nothing to say".

"I don't know what is their policy".

But Arsenal may be pipped to the post by City, Wenger admitted, if it comes down to financial clout.

Arsenal are reportedly ready to spend £25m on Evans (with Mathieu Debuchy potentially moving as part of the deal) but the West Brom defender is also a target for Manchester City.

And when probed about whether Arsenal would be willing to sell the Chile global, he said: "I have nothing to add to what I said before on that".

"I think Arsenal have said that if the right player comes along they will be looking into it", Phelan told Sky Sports News on Monday.

Wenger acknowledged that his defence has struggled this season, with the Gunners sitting in sixth place in the Premier League and having suffered a third-round FA Cup exit against Nottingham Forest.

The Gunners have conceded 28 times in 22 games in the Premier League this season to leave the north London side five points adrift of fourth-placed Liverpool FC in the race to secure a Champions League spot.

Arsenal face Chelsea in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final tomorrow at Stamford Bridge.

A ball playing centre-half, Evans fits with the way both Wenger and City manager Pep Guardiola want to play.
