  • HP recalls computer batteries over fire risk

HP has recalled batteries in notebook computers and mobile workstations.

It affects about 50,000 lithium ion batteries shipped with or sold as accessories to these computers between December 2015 and December 2017.

The batteries in question were also sold as replacements for the HP ZBook Studio G4 mobile workstation or any of the above products, HP says.

"Consumers should immediately visit www.HP.com/go/batteryprogram2018 to see if their battery is included in the recall and for instructions on how to enable "Battery Safety Mode" if their battery is included in the recall", the U.S. CPSC reports. There were three reports of property damage, and one report of a minor burn.

HP has promised a free battery replacement and an appointment to get it replaced for the impacted customers.

In an incident that reminds us of the nasty fire hazard that the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 proved to be, it is now HP that is issuing a similar warning message for some of its Notebook and laptop devices.

The affected batteries were sold with the listed HP computers, or at Best Buy and other authorized dealers nationwide.

HP has issued a safety recall for thousands of laptop batteries used in its products around the world.

"HP's primary concern is for the safety of our customers", it said.

In addition, the company has pushed a BIOS update that puts affected batteries in "Battery Safety Mode", which allows the laptops to continue working without their batteries by connecting to an HP power adaptor. That will prevent the battery from overheating. They were also sold online at places like Amazon and HP's own web store.

Full details of the recall are available on the official website, along with a Windows utility to check the installed battery.
