  • Germany's far-right AfD leader's twitter handle was blocked after her anti Muslim remarks

The deputy leader of the German far-right AfD party Beatrix von Storch is under police investigation following social media posts she made on New Year's Eve.

The attacks, allegedly carried out by men with migrant backgrounds, sparked outrage across Germany amid tensions over the arrival of 1.1million refugees in 2015.

Following Von Storch's post in response to the police message, Twitter blocked her account for 12 hours for violating its content rules regarding hate speech.

The authorities are considering whether Von Storch should be charged with incitement to hatred, a criminal offence. "Why does an official police site tweet in Arabic", tweeted von Storch.

Ms Storch's remarks came after the city's police force tweeted New Year greetings in a number of languages, including English and French as well as German and Arabic. "Why is an official police site from North Rhine-Westphalia tweeting in Arabic?" she wrote.

New Year celebrations in Cologne were overshadowed two years ago when hundreds of women complained of being groped and robbed, mostly by groups of migrants.

In December, the social network booted Britain First deputy leader Jayda Fransen, who famously posted three bigoted anti-Muslim videos that were later shared by President Donald Trump, as well as least two other accounts tied to the United Kingdom -based group in what became known as the #TwitterPurge.

She then re-posted the same message on Facebook, where it was also blocked for reasons of incitement.

Having started off her career as a banker, von Storch went on to become a lawyer before entering politics.

Fellow members of the populists party lamented what they called "censorship attempts" by the social media and the federal government, referring to a new law that came into effect in the new year, in an attempt to clamp down on online hate speech.

She has been equally vocal about eradicating Islam from Germany.

The AfD took 92 parliamentary seats in September elections - the strongest showing for a far-right party in the post-war era - as it capitalised on discontent over the more than one million asylum seekers who have arrived in Germany since 2015.
