  • Women in Hollywood band together in anti-harassment initiative

The initiative follows the rise of the #MeToo hashtag, which saw people sharing their experiences of sexual harassment on social media, in response to the allegations made about various men in Hollywood in light of the Weinstein scandal.

Producer Harvey Weinstein became synonymous with sexual harassment after the New York Times exposed his history of predatory behaviour against women in October a year ago.

The Time's Up website details and defines what sexual harassment is, and what to do if it happens to you.

They announced the project Monday in a full-page New York Times advertisement, and their goals include fighting non-disclosure agreements that protect sexual abusers and helping women who are victims of sexual misconduct but can not afford to hire lawyers.

The letter, which is aimed at "every woman. who has had to fend off sexual advances", goes on to say that such harassment can often continue because "perpetrators and employers never face any consequences".

It has vowed to push for legislation to strengthen laws on workplace harassment and discrimination.

Along with helping victims, the campaign calls for more women in positions of leadership and power across industries.

"We remain committed to holding our own workplaces accountable, pushing for swift and effective change to make the entertainment industry a safe and equitable place for everyone", the letter reads.

Time's Up is backing the movement for women to wear black, in solidarity with those who have been sexually harassed, at Sunday's Golden Globes ceremony.

The open letter, published as a full-page ad in The New York Times and the Spanish-language La Opinion, opens with "Dear sisters" and closes "in solidarity".

Witherspoon said that in the past women have been "siloed off from each other".
