  • Raiders to pursue Jon Gruden for coaching job

Jon Gruden reacted with a chuckle when asked about a report Saturday night the Raiders would make a serious offer in hopes that he would return as head coach.

Asked how to best characterize the situation, Gruden said, 'I've got nothing to report.

"I don't want to sit here and speculate", Gruden told the network. "There is no news". I take a lot every year from coaches, some others. Yeah, sometimes owners. Guys want to bounce ideas off me. "I'm here to help people".

The Raiders signed Jack Del Rio to a four-year extension before this season coming off a 12-4 record and postseason appearance in 2016.

It appears it's not merely a pipe dream for the Raiders to persuade Gruden to re-join the head coaching ranks, as the report mentions that Gruden will be tempted to accept the offer, but would choose to wait until the end of the 2017 season to make his decision. "This is insane", Gruden said in a phone interview. His first year with the Bucs saw him with the lone Super Bowl of his career, defeating none other than the Raiders. But there is increasing chatter that this time it will be different and Gruden will truly consider leaving his job as an ESPN analyst to return to coaching.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden grimaces as he speaks to the media during his weekly news conference Monday Dec. 29, 2008 in Tampa, Fla.

"The owner", one source said about Davis, "has an affinity for him". Then-owner Al Davis traded Gruden in 2002 to Tampa Bay, where Gruden led the Buccaneers to a Super Bowl win over the Raiders that season.

His name is brought up for coaching vacancies seemingly every year, but Gruden has to this point resisted offers and instead stayed with ESPN, often negotiating himself extensions and raises in the process. He's making $6.5 million annually to talk about football, and not have the insane stress that comes with being an NFL head coach.
