  • Facebook may soon ask you to link your account with your Aadhaar Card

But, unperturbed by these developments, Facebook has asking news users to use the details as per their Aadhaar card. The latest move is aimed at curbing the number of fake accounts on the social media platform that has over 241 million users in the country, making India the second largest market for Facebook after the US. Fortunately, that is not what's happening here. The "name as per Aadhaar" prompt is right now just spotted on Facebook's mobile site by a Reddit user, and there's no sign of its existence on the Facebook app or desktop version.

According to reports, currently, only a small percentage of people, using Facebook on mobile are able to see this feature.

In the month of April this year, we had published a satirical post, wherein we had created a scenario where every Google search, Facebook account and Tinder swipe was linked with Aadhaar.

On Thursday, the US-based social media platform issued a statement in which it termed the new process of the registration as "test" and announced that it has no plans to continue it further. Facebook India further reiterated in the post that the request to enter name as per Aadhaar card was optional and not mandatory for new user registration.

Daughter of Eric Garner suffers major brain damage in heart attack
On Dec. 28, New York Daily News reported that Garner, 27, was declared brain dead by doctors without a chance of recovery. After a video of Garner's death went viral, activists gathered across the nation to protest police brutality.

"Using the name on your Aadhaar card makes it easier for friends to recognise you", says the prompt when one submits the name for a new account. Previously, it used to suggest users to use the real name. Facebook now has no such plans to pan out this feature to more users.

Data privacy has become a hot topic of discussion in the country, especially after so many breaches have come to light especially in case of Aadhaar. Following the same, it looks like the Aadhaar verification has made its way to the social media as well.

Facebook has clarified that its recent "Aadhaar prompt" was not meant to collect users' data. Earlier, an online retailer had asked customers to upload their Aadhaar numbers to track lost packages. The reason is that UID is an easy way to verify one's account on Twitter and Facebook.
