  • Apple Apologizes for Throttling Phones With Aging Batteries Promises More Transparency and Discounted Replacements

A statement on Apple's website said: "We've been hearing feedback from our customers about the way we handle performance for iPhones with older batteries and how we have communicated that process".

So we'll keep you updated on Android manufacturer responses to Apple's throttling and whether or not they perform similar actions to their older phones.

Apple also says it will cut the price of a battery replacement by $50 to $29.

In Apple's confirmation of the "feature" it introduced past year, it didn't say that this was a common practice in the smartphone industry or anything of that sort. "First and foremost, we have never - and would never - do anything to intentionally shorten the life of any Apple product, or degrade the user experience to drive customer upgrades".

All rechargeable batteries are consumable components that become less effective as they chemically age and their ability to hold a charge diminishes.

Apple released their lengthy statement Thursday, addressing their controversial decision to slow down older models.

Apple admits to slowing down older iPhones Apple admitted it intentionally throttles the speed of older phones' processors, including the iPhones 6, 6S and 7 to prevent random shutdowns. Specifically, it's a failsafe measure included in all versions of iOS released in the past year meant to keep components from catching fire and to prevent random shutdowns. Further, the Korean tech press was even demanding the recall of the iPhone 8 even before it was made available in South Korea, according to Patently Apple.

The offer comes on the heels of a growing number of lawsuits filed against Apple in the wake of its admission of deliberately slowing down older iPhones to prevent unexpected shutdowns as batteries age. iPhone owners in Florida, California, Illinois, New York and New Jersey are seeking class-action status in suits with plaintiffs saying they bought new iPhones because of the slow downs. Just a month ago (before the launch of the iPhone X), the Korean authorities raided Apple's offices in the country.

Apple says users began reporting slower performance in the fall, when iOS 11 was released. The company also will update its iOS operating system to let users see whether their battery is in poor health and is affecting the phone's performance.
