Four Ohio teenagers were charged with murder on Wednesday, accused of tossing a sandbag from a highway overpass in Toledo that killed a passenger in a vehicle last week, prosecutors said.
Marquise Byrd, 22, died of his injuries Friday, days after the December 19 incident on Interstate 75 in Toledo. She frantically called 911 when the sandbag hit the vehicle. The bag landed on a auto, crashed through the windshield and critically injured the front passenger, Marquise Byrd, of Warren, Michigan. "I think this windshield may have smacked his head", she said.
Byrd, who sustained a serious head injury, was treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital. They were initially charged with the juvenile equivalent of felonious assault.
The loved ones of Marquise Byrd grieve his tragic killing as they prepare for a series of court cases to come.
"This is a case where the state has very strong evidence ― there were statements made by all of the juveniles involved in this case", Lucas County Deputy Prosecutor Lori Olender told the Toledo Blade.
Byrd, the father of a 1-year-old boy, was reportedly engaged to be married.
The suspects, who have not been identified due to their ages, are now being held without bail at the Lucas Juvenile Justice Center.
The four teens, ages 13 and 14, were allegedly seen leaving the area of the overpass after the incident, police said.
"My auntie has to bury her son".
The teens have been charged each with one count of second-degree murder, and one count of conspiracy to commit second-degree murder. "He's gone. He's never coming back", Ms. King said.
In October, prosecutors in Genesee County, Michigan, said that five teenagers would be tried as adults after being charged for murder in an incident in which a passenger was killed by a rock, also on Interstate 75.
